Statement
In the film A Quiet Place a common theme of the fear of silence, the unknown, uncertainty and helplessness are explored. In the movie Lee and Marcus are gathering supplies, they come across a crazy old man in the woods who randomly starts screaming trying to attract a monster. Lee grabs Marcus and runs to cover, doing everything he can to make sure Marcus doesn't make a single sound that attracts attention, the creature kills the old man and eventually wonders off. This scene shows the evident fear of helplessness and uncertainty. In my adaptation I want to emulate the same fears because I believe it has a big involvement in the film.
I like how the main character that John Krasinski plays is such a strong father figure even during times where they're being hunted by monstrous creatures. Lee, Krasinski’s character is always trying to figure out what the creatures are and how to hunt them, he doesn't give up trying to make his daughter makeshift hearing-aids that save her life multiple times and in the sequel will probably save them all. The fear of losing his family and failing them is unacceptable to him and he sacrifices everything to keep them alive. One thing I dislike in the film is that because the characters have to be silent anything they say is in sign language and subtitles, this really makes the characters facial expressions important.
The movie takes place in rural upstate New York and its mostly in the woods or on a farm, the family rarely sees anybody else, if the setting took place in the city with lots of people the whole idea of being 100% silent couldn't work. It takes place in 2020, changing that to the future could be interesting with the changing technology. If it took place in the 50s it wouldn't make much of a difference. A sequel would give the characters world hope that they can eliminate the monsters and not live in fear anymore
The film shows the whole family’s journey and experiences, each family member gets screen time where they are being hunted and they have to save themselves. I believe Regan is a more important character then Lee because she’s the reason Beau got killed, she has to deal with being deaf in a world where even the slightest noise can get you killed. Not knowing what things can make certain noises would be incredibly stressful and difficult to deal with. She believes that her father doesn’t approve of her and she tries to prove her self to him. I think that an adaptation where the film focuses solely on Regan’s perspective would be very interesting. The majority of society doesn’t realize the difficulties that a deaf person has to go through in day to day life, when made into a world with monsters like this those difficulties are much worse.
